I-Search

After finishing the I-Search, I was so relieved of finishing it because it was a little complicated writing the script. My overall experience in

Blog Answers to these Questions

Your group may work together to come up with the answers. But each of you will be given a grade based on your blog entry. It's OK if they are the same IF they're really good.
  1. Which of the 8 rules of Media Literacy is illustrated in the Beauty and Body Image article? Why and how?
  2. The article on advertising to children is a great example of media constructing reality (#2 rule of Media Literacy). Can you think of an example of media constructed reality aimed at teens? Tell me what it is and how it constructs reality.
  3. The commercial implications (#4) of media literacy are illustrated in The Economics of Ethnicity link. Do you think most media does a good job of showing what your real life is like? The number of minority people you see daily, the kinds of problems you have in real life, the way those problems get solved - are these things that you see in TV shows, movies and advertising?

 Answers:
1.  The 8 rules of Media Literacy that's illustrated in the Beauty and Body Image article is that all media is constructed, you think the way you think because of media, media has commercial implications, audience negotiate the meaning in media,  media contain valuable messages, media has political and social implications, the forms and content in media, and each media has a type aesthetic form.

2. An example of media constructed toward teens is like TV shows or Dramas because the tv shows is like reality and teens sometimes look up to the celebrities like their role model.

3. I don't really think media does a good job showing what your real life is like because TV shows and movies are just like acting and they do not show their natural beauty or self because they're acting out the script and they have makeup on and they probably photoshop their figures.

Tour of Francisco MS Commercial

The commercial that my group made was the Tour of Francisco commercial. We were supposed to make a Talent show commercial, but after we found out that there wasn't going to be one, I thought to myself that we just made a script and put our wonderful ideas on paper for no reason. So, we decided to make a brand new video of a tour of Francisco Middle School. Making the script took a lot of concentration and focus because we needed to know what we were going to do, what to say, and what kind of shots. We had to collect a lot of video and interviews and I thought that the most hardest thing to do was to get interviews from the staff because they were always busy working on stuff and it seemed that we just couldn't find some time to shoot it, but we finally did and it only took like 5 minutes of their time. Getting the pictures were easier than the interviews because we just had to take a short 1-2 second video and take a capture of the part that we want. After all, I thought that the commercial turned out to be pretty good and better than the old one.

High School Acceptance

The high school that I applied to was Lowell, Galileo, Washington, and Lincoln High. I put Lowell as my first choice because it has high academics and my parents would be proud of me if I did get in. When the letters that told you where you got accepted to came, my heart was racing while I opened the letter. After opening it carefully and taking the letter out, I was shocked because I actually made it into Lowell! I was jumping up and down with happiness.

T.V Advertisement

One advertisement that I liked is the SUBWAY commercial because every time I see it, it would have people keep saying $5.00, $5.00, $5.00 foot long and it makes me want to buy one to eat.

PSA Summary

In media arts, we learned how to make a public service announcement with help from San Francisco's Film Society. We split into groups and I was paired with Luz and Stephanie. Our subject was something like making the world a better place. On the first day of making the PSA, I was a little confused on how we should make the script and where we were going to find the pictures because we had to take them ourselves for copyright reasons. So, we started making a script, filming, finding the music, and taking the pictures.

After we finished everything, we started to edit the PSA. The most hard part of the PSA for me would be editing and filming. All of us at least messed up once on our parts and editing took a lot of time, concentration, and work. We had to add and remove stuff, make the music fit in with our voices, fix the pictures we took, etc...  I guess all of the work payed off because it turned out to look pretty good. I'm glad that the San Francisco Film Society helped us when we were stuck. I thought that this was a great experience because we learned some of the camera shots such as close-ups, long-shots, and medium-shots.
